For defensive measures, gold is used in order to upgrade the town hall, and also build higher levels for the existing buildings. The dark elixir is for heroes and troops. Later on in the game, if you are still alive, you can have what is called an inferno tower. All of these things work toward one directive which is being able to confront all of the different people that are part of the game in order to win in combat. The more creatures that you have, the more gold and elixir, as well as gems that you can purchase separately, you will be able to create an army that is not going to be easily stopped.
